Leading Through Loss: Exploring Intersections of Grief, Death, and Identity

PAUSE’s “Leading through loss” series aims to gather workplace leaders (in particular - HR leaders, managers, and Employee Resource Group/ERG leaders) for workshops focused on how to support employees, colleagues, and community through grief, loss, and bereavement leave.

*That said, these workshops are open to the general public and will be incredibly useful / relevant to anyone supporting folks navigating grief, dying, and death. We invite anyone and everyone interested in this topic to join!

Workshop #1 “Exploring intersections of grief, race, and identity” will cover how someone’s unique identity as a Person of Color can impact their experience with grief, death, and bereavement leave. And how employers, leaders, and colleagues can best support the folks in their community with culturally-sensitive knowledge and resources.

This workshop is for you if:

  • Your role involves supporting folks through grief, death, and bereavement leave.
  • You’re passionate about making your workplace or other workplaces safer and more inclusive for those who are grieving or navigating death/loss.
  • You feel like you’re ill-equipped by your workplace when it comes to supporting folks that you manage or interact with.
  • You fit the description of the folks we’re talking about serving (People of Color) and you want to learn more about how you can advocate for better care and resources at your workplace.

In this workshop we’ll explore the following questions:

  1. How does being a person of color impact grief and end-of-life experiences?
  2. How might you equip yourself to support folks of color who are navigating grief and end-of-life?
  3. What resources address the intersections of grief and identity?
  4. How can you or your workplace expand your internal resources and offerings?

In this workshop attendees will:

  • Learn via resources from leaders in the grief, end-of-life, and HR/business spaces
  • Interact with other attendees in small group and large group discussions
  • Participate in numerous activities and practices that will be directly applicable to their roles
  • Have a live Q&A with the workshop leader
  • Gain access to a customized resource list that’ll support them as they step out of the workshop and back into their workplace (and wider community!)
