Pet Loss

Pet loss is one of the most common—and most frequently minimized—forms of grief. This 1.5-hour class explores why the death of a companion animal can be as profound and painful as other significant losses. Drawing on the history of human–animal bonds, we will consider the many roles pets occupy in our lives and families, as well as the cultural forces that influence whether pet-loss grief is validated or dismissed.

We will examine the many ways grief following pet loss can unfold, what may distinguish it from other forms of bereavement, and why so many grieving pet owners experience disenfranchised—or unrecognized—grief. The session will also consider the different circumstances surrounding a pet’s death and how those experiences can shape the grieving process.

We will close with practical, research-informed approaches for coping with pet loss and supporting others as they navigate this uniquely tender form of grief.
